THE TEAM NEWS

JAPAN

  • Japan enter this game on an excellent run of form. Following their 2-0 away win over Kyrgyzstan in their previous encounter, The Blue Samurais extended their winning streak to five games, while pushing their undefeated streak to seven matches (W5, D2). They have also kept five straight clean sheets.
  • Manager Hajime Moriyasu has chosen to face this game with an alternative squad and due to this, several experienced players like Maya Yoshida, Yuto Nagatomo and Hiroki Sakai won’t take part as many non-regulars are expected to see a healthy amount of playing time.

Expected Starting XI: Shuichi Gonda; Sei Muroya, Naomichi Ueda, Genta Miura, Shinnosuke Hatanaka; Gaku Shibasaki, Genki Haraguchi; Takuma Asano, Shoya Nakajima, Hotaru Yamaguchi; Kensuke Nagai

VENEZUELA

  • Venezuela endured major success during the October international break, as they defeated Bolivia (4-1) and Trinidad & Tobago (2-0) at home. La Vinotinto are currently riding a three-game undefeated streak and have lost just once over their last five outings. They are also undefeated in their last four friendlies.
  • Manager Rafael Dudamel has not included midfielder Junior Moreno and centre-back Jhon Chancellor due to injury – both players have been regulars in the starting lineup over the past 12 months. The former goalkeeper is expected to field the best XI available here, as he is not known for making too many rotations in friendlies.

Expected Starting XI: Wuilker Fariñez; Ronald Hernández, Wilker Ángel, Mikel Villanueva, Roberto Rosales; Tomás Rincón, Yangel Herrera; Jhon Murillo, Rómulo Otero, Darwin Machís; Salomón Rondón

THE PREDICTION

It is worth noting that the four previous matches between these teams ended in draws – three of those produced under 2.5 goals and Japan scored the opening goal in all three that featured a goal at all. Venezuela enter this game on a good run of form but so do Japan. The hosts, however, will be without several first-team regulars ahead of this match since the coaching staff has decided to field an alternative squad. Japan should be considered as slight favourites, but Venezuela have a decent chance at pulling the upset given the experience of their squad.
